Recipe Description

A hearty and crusty German farmer’s bread made entirely vegan. Perfect for sandwiches or to accompany any meal.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1.5 cups warm water
  • 1 packet dry yeast
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • Cornmeal for dusting

Steps:

  1. Combine warm water, yeast, and maple syrup in a large bowl. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add whole wheat flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Knead until the dough forms, about 10 minutes.
  3. Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
  4. Punch the dough down and form it into a round loaf. Place it on a baking sheet dusted with cornmeal.
  5. Let the dough rise again for 30 minutes.
  6. Bake the bread for 40 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.
  7. Let the bread cool before slicing.
