Recipe Description

Crispy, golden pastry stuffed with a spicy and savory vegan filling. These vegan Jamaican Patties are the perfect combination of flaky and flavorful, transporting you straight to the islands with every bite.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 1 tsp turmeric for color
  • 1 cup cooked and mashed butternut squash
  • 1/2 cup frozen peas
  • 1 finely chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp Jamaican curry powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup vegetable shortening

Steps:

  1. Prepare the dough by mixing flour, turmeric, and a pinch of salt. Cut in the vegetable shortening, then slowly add cold water until a dough forms. Chill for 30 minutes.
  2. For the filling, sauté onions and garlic until translucent. Add curry powder, then the mashed butternary squash and peas. Cook until heated through.
  3. Divide the dough into 12 portions. Roll each into a circle, add filling, then fold and seal the edges.
  4. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 25-30 minutes, or until golden and crispy.
