Its simplicity, combined with the profound depth of taste, allows it to stand out. Perfect for any day of the week, this recipe brings the essence of Indian culinary traditions right into your kitchen.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup mixed lentils (such as toor dal, masoor dal, and yellow moong dal), rinsed
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • Salt, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon ginger garlic paste
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 1 tomato, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish

Steps:

  1. In a large pot, combine lentils, water, turmeric, and salt. Bring to a boil, then simmer until lentils are soft, about 20-30 minutes.
  2. In a separate pan, heat oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and allow them to splutter.
  3. Add onions and cook until golden. Stir in ginger garlic paste, green chilies, and tomatoes. Cook until tomatoes are soft.
  4. Add coriander powder, garam masala, and red chili powder to the tomato mixture. Cook for another 2 minutes.
  5. Pour the tomato mixture into the cooked lentils. Stir well to combine. Cook for another 5-10 minutes.
