Recipe Description

A festive Dutch New Year’s treat, these vegan oliebollen are deep-fried dough balls, light and fluffy on the inside, and can be filled with raisins or apple pieces for extra sweetness.

Ingredients

  • 1 package dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm plant-based milk
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 apple, peeled and chopped (optional)
  • 1/2 cup raisins (optional)
  • Powdered sugar for serving

Steps:

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm plant-based milk.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt.
  3. Add the yeast mixture to the flour and mix until a sticky dough forms.
  4. Fold in chopped apple and raisins if using.
  5. Cover and allow to rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  6. Drop spoonfuls of the dough into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown.
  7. Drain on paper towels and dust with powdered sugar before serving.
