    Recipe Description

    This delicious vegan twist on the classic Japanese Tonkatsu features crispy breaded tofu or seitan slices, seasoned to perfection and fried to achieve that iconic golden brown crust. Accompanied by a tangy house-made Tonkatsu sauce, this dish offers a satisfying crunch and deep umami flavors that are sure to impress both vegans and non-vegans alike. It’s perfect for those who seek a hearty plant-based meal that doesn’t compromise on texture or taste.

    Ingredients

    • 4 slices of firm tofu or seitan
    • Salt and pepper to taste
    • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
    • 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast
    • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
    • 1 teaspoon onion powder
    • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
    • 1 cup unsweetened plant-based milk
    • 2 cups vegetable oil, for frying
    • 1/4 cup soy sauce
    • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
    • 1 tablespoon vegan Worcestershire sauce
    • 1 teaspoon mustard

    Steps:

    1. Press tofu or seitan to remove excess moisture.
    2. Season with salt and pepper.
    3. Set up dredging stations: one bowl of flour, one bowl of plant-based milk, and one bowl of mixed panko, nutritional yeast, garlic, and onion powders.
    4. Dredge each slice first in flour, then dip in milk, and finally coat with panko mixture.
    5. Heat oil in a pan and fry each piece until golden brown, about 5 minutes per side.
    6. Serve hot with the sauce drizzled over or on the side for dipping.
