    This Classic Vegan Dirty Rice recipe delivers the heart and soul of traditional Louisiana cooking with a vegan twist. It fuses the aromatic presence of bell peppers, celery, and onions, known as the holy trinity of vegetables, with the deep, savory flavors of garlic, spices, and herbs. The key to this dish’s signature ‘dirty’ look is the inclusion of vegan ground meat, beautifully mimicking the texture and richness typically provided by animal products. Brown rice serves as the healthful base, absorbing the bold seasonings and vegetable broth, making this dish not only a comfort food but also a wholesome meal. This vegan rendition respects the heritage of Dirty Rice, while offering a plant-based option that is both nutritious and satisfying.

    Ingredients

    • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
    • 1 cup finely chopped onion
    • 1/2 cup finely chopped bell pepper
    • 1/2 cup finely chopped celery
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
    • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
    • 1 teaspoon thyme
    • 1/2 teaspoon oregano
    • Salt and black pepper to taste
    • 1 cup brown rice
    • 2 1/2 cups vegetable broth
    • 1 cup vegan ground meat
    • 2 green onions, sliced
    • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

    Steps:

    1. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion, bell pepper, and celery, and sauté until softened.
    2. Add garlic, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, thyme, oregano, salt, and pepper. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
    3. Stir in the brown rice until well coated with the spice mixture.
    4. Add the vegetable broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 25 minutes, or until the rice is tender.
    5. Stir in the vegan ground meat, cover, and cook for 5 more minutes, or until heated through.
    6. Stir in green onions and parsley before serving.
