Recipe Description
A traditional, dense Irish bread made vegan-friendly. Perfect alongside your favorite stew or just to enjoy with a dab of vegan butter. No kneading required and remarkably simple to make.
Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 3/4 cups vegan buttermilk (mix 1¾ cups of soy or almond milk with 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar)
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup (optional for a slight sweetness)
Steps:
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
- Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the vegan buttermilk and maple syrup if using. Stir until just combined.
- On a lightly floured surface, gently knead the dough into a round loaf, then place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Cut a cross on the top of the loaf to help it expand while baking.
- Let cool on a wire rack before slicing.
