Recipe Description
Classic Vegan Tostones are a cherished recipe originating from the heart of the Caribbean and Latin American kitchens, where green plantains are the star of the show. This recipe transforms the starchy fruit into crispy, golden delights, making it a perfect vegan snack or appetizer. The process begins with slicing the green plantains, then frying them lightly, flattening, and frying again until they reach perfection. Served with a side of vegan garlic sauce or a sprinkle of sea salt, these tostones offer a crunchy outside with a tender inside. This dish embraces the simplicity and flavors of its origin, providing a delightful experience for those seeking to explore vegan variants of traditional Caribbean cuisine.
Ingredients
- 4 green plantains
- Salt to taste
- 2 cups of vegetable oil for frying
Steps:
- Peel the green plantains and cut them into 1-inch thick slices.
- Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the plantain slices for about 3 minutes on each side, or until they are light golden but not brown.
- Remove the plantains from the oil and flatten them using a tostonera or the bottom of a glass jar.
- Return the flattened plantains to the hot oil and fry again for about 2 minutes on each side, or until they are crispy and golden brown.
- Drain the tostones on paper towels and season with salt while still hot.
