Recipe Description

A traditional, dense Irish bread made vegan-friendly. Perfect alongside your favorite stew or just to enjoy with a dab of vegan butter. No kneading required and remarkably simple to make.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 3/4 cups vegan buttermilk (mix 1¾ cups of soy or almond milk with 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar)
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup (optional for a slight sweetness)

Steps:

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the vegan buttermilk and maple syrup if using. Stir until just combined.
  4. On a lightly floured surface, gently knead the dough into a round loaf, then place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  5. Cut a cross on the top of the loaf to help it expand while baking.
  6. Let cool on a wire rack before slicing.
